"Maybe caller name"

recently i updated my iPhone 6 Plus to ios 10. I have received wrong text messages from other people looking for someone else. The number is not in my contact list and I don't know the person but it shows "maybe (person's name). I read that is related to your email but i don't have that person's info in my email, i never sent email to them or received from them. is it possible that this caller ID works for numbers that I never had contact with before? So if I sent a text message to a wrong number they will see "maybe (my name)" even if they never contacted me or have my information in their email?

Hi Butterfly 85,

I understand that you have some questions about how your iPhone has determined the name to show for a number that is otherwise not in your contacts. I know it's important to have control over the information on your iPhone, so I'm happy to help.

It seems that the caller ID functionality may be determined by your carrier. You can contact your carrier for details, or check out this article to see how to disable it:
